Plasma Studio „Nodal Landscapes“ in the FORMULA_X Series

In physics the term ‘plasma’ describes a particular state of matter in which energy is readily conducted through a material – the fluid spaces of Plasma Studio’s architecture work by the same principle. Folding space into space, the architects draw landscapes into buildings, streets into facades, inside to outside. Transformative tectonics set spaces, planes and bodies into unforeseen relationships that challenge conventional topographies and spatial codes.

For the last 10 years the office, currently based in London, Southern Tyrol and Beijing, has been widely recognized as one of the leading international architecture and design practices of the emerging generation. From small scale installations to large scale master planning, Plasma Studio’s projects bear strongly the mark of a digital design process. Propelled by the partners’ academic research and teaching at the Architectural Association in London. Plasma Studio develops architectural solutions by mediating between the scales of topography & context on the one hand, and sensory & physical relationships on the other. Their holistic design process enables an elastic response to completely varied contextual conditions and assignments. The exhibition at the DAZ presents their characteristic approach within a jump in scale ; from built projects in Europe to recent work – in – progress planning in China.

ECOSISTEMA URBANO in the FORMULA_X Series

Ecosistema Urbano’s name is program : Their projects combine architecture, urbanism, engineering and sociology to strive for a ‘creative urban sustainability’. The focus of their work is on the complex phenomenon of the city, which they react to (or activate) through innovative, creative and holistic interventions. The interdisciplinary office from Madrid is an international consultant on sustainable urban development for cities and regions. Public space is thereby a central issue : Ecosistema Urbano catalyses urban processes that help citizens to change their own environment through proactive interventions.

The work of Ecosistema Urbano defines new boundaries of the profession of architecture and urban planning : They are moderators, develop strategies, systems and social media interfaces for a spurring on urbanity. With their own social network, blog and web – TV, Ecosistema Urbano offers various platforms to bring people together and to share knowledge about sustainable urban development and ideas for the city.

Designing processes and situations where the relations between people can be optimized is Ecosistema Urbano’s key to a successful project. Their exhibition at the DAZ will visualize, through a classical 3 D optical system, the process and strategies for a selection of recent work.

AFF Architects „In Love, To:“ in the FORMULA_X Series

The work of AFF is based on the understanding of architecture as an object, something sculptural. This view manifests itself already during the development process of their projects. AFF’s work develops through a process of designing in which they use trusted procedures. For AFF, this means: Producing and simultaneously constantly deciding, correcting, refining. Every step can be a new source of inspiration; every intermediate result creates new reactions and is part of an evolution.

But, where does the process begin? Where does it end? AFF would like to show the very beginning: It is the memories and the impressions that, at a first glance do not seem to have any influence on decisions, but indeed play a role beyond the beginning of a project. The process is determined by objects and images that have a strong character and their own past. It is the mysteriousness of the stories behind these objects that provokes AFF: with their own logic and charm the loved objects and images entice to anew. In Love, To :

SMAQ’s work focuses on »architecture, urbanism, research« and was founded by Sabine Müller (born 1969) and Andreas Quednau (born 1967) in Rotterdom. Since 2005, SMAQ is based in Berlin and realizes projects worldwide. They are currently working on a masterplan for Xeritown (Dubai), a 56 ha mixed-use development area in the wasteland of Dubai Land. Among their current projects are furthermore a hotel in Bejing and »Cumulus«, a residential area in Oslo. SMAQ has been awarded with numerous prizes and fellowships: The architectural practice has won the EUROPAN competition for several times, was awarded with the LEG-Prize 2000 of the Landesentwicklungsgesellschaft Germany, In GLASHAUS_10, SMAQ presents the following projects: the installation BATH (Castle park Solitüde, Germany), the masterplan and landscape study »DotsandLoops« (Burgos, Spain), Xeritown (Dubai) and »Cumulus« (Oslo, Norway). www.smaq.net

»thing XPS« Bhss-architekten (Leipzig) is one the most successful architectural practices in East-Germany, where they have realized projects as a school for blind children in Chemnitz (2007), an educational center for the Ostdeutsche Sparkassenakademie (2001) and the Campus Center Breitenbrunn (2007). One of their current projects is Solar Valley Mitteldeutschland, one of Europe’s largest centers of the solar industry.

The architects understand the Glashaus as »space between inside and outside, idea and realization, building material and art work«. Thing XPS is the subtitle of the exhibition coined by the bhss principals Heiko Behnisch (1965), Stefan Hermus (1964), Michael Schinko (1962) and Uwe Schumann (1961). »Thing« stands for the »place of negotiation« and for the decision making process at bhss, which is always a result of negotiation. »XPS« is the name of a foam concentrate, a material for model building and information medium, which can be modified into different scales. A loop made of XPS connects the exhibition space to the working methods of bhss and becomes the frame for the presentation of selected projects. www.bhss-architekten.de

»Brand X« Corporate Architecture – translating corporate identity into designed space – has become an increasingly important working field for architects. GLASHAUS_06 presents Franken Architekten (Frankfurt/Main), experts at tailored architectural solutions. With the exhibition »Brand X«, the awardwinning office visualizes their design process.

Franken Architekten was founded by Bernhard Franken (*1965) in 2002. Corporate Architecture – »brandscaping« – is the main focus of the young office. »Brandscapes provide a spatial context for the entrepreneurial vision of the client – visible, tangible, palpable to all the senses. They are never just functional, but rather communicate and transport messages effectively and intuitively«, formulates Franken Architekten in their mission statement. Franken stands for spectular spatial sculptures and narrative designs. Sturm+Wartzeck, the young office of architects Susanne Wartzeck (1966) and Jörg Sturm (1966), present their work under the title »Archetype and Experiment« at GLASHAUS_05.

An extraordinary aesthetic clarity and original, often minimalist yet effective solutions distinguish the works of Sturm+Wartzeck. The office does not only focus on »classical« architectural projects: Their designs for furniture and accessories have won numerous awards, e.g. the red dot Design Award. They also engage in research projects on experimental building methods in the area of housing. »Archetype and Experiment«, also stands for the working approach of the office. In their architecture and designs, Sturm+Wartzeck do not strive for the spectacular, but focus on the essential. They question so-called standards and develop clear, functional and, at the same time, sensual designs. High Quality – Low Energy Design

Bucholz McEvoy Architects (Dublin / Berlin) are one of the most successful architectural offices in Ireland. Their projects combine ecology and design to create extraordinary solutions, which have been awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architects, the Royal Institute of Irish Architects and many others.

Already with their first realized project, Fingal County Council, Merritt Bucholz (born 1966) and Karen McEvoy (born 1962) broke new ground for sustainable, low energy design in the public sector in Ireland. Since then, the office has grown to 23 employees and has completed more than 20 building for public and private clients. At GLASHAUS_04, BMcEA will introduce their approach, focusing on their most recent project, Elm Park Development, a mini-city of over 100.000 sqm – with apartments, a health clinic, a hotel, offices, senior citizen housing and a leisure center – set in a green urban public space.

Drawings, prototypes and models visualize the design process. BMcEA will be present in Berlin beyond the exhibition – parallel to the show, they open their first office outside of Ireland in Berlin. www.bmcea.com

ROBERTNEUN™: GLASHAUS_03 Exhibition at the DAZ

The projects by ROBERTNEUN™ (Berlin) focus on the transformation of spaces into experiences – besides clubs and bars, the office has designed an art gallery, a show room and several delicatessen grocery markets. Their exemplary work shows how young architects develop creative and intelligent solutions of high architectural quality within a limited budget. For their Weekend Club at the 12th floor of a high-rise building, ROBERTNEUN™ was recently awarded with the Berlin Architectural Award.

Thomas Baecker (born 1969), Nils Buschmann (born 1972) and Tom Friedrich (born 1972) have been working together under the label of ROBERTNEUN™ for six years. The DAZ Glashaus exhibition not only features their realized projects but also highlights their working methods and the creative process that determine the final building or interior design. It is remarkable in the age of virtual space, renderings and 3D animation that ROBERTNEUN™ tests their ideas with physical models.
